LSOAs

There are 373 Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs) covering North Yorkshire. LSOAs are statistical boundaries produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). They are more consistent over time than administrative boundaries such as wards.

Although they are broadly similar in terms of population and household numbers (between 1,000 and 3,000 population and between 400 and 1,200 households) the physical size of LSOA boundaries can vary considerably. In densely populated urban areas they are relatively small, while in the sparsely populated rural areas of North Yorkshire a single LSOA may cover many square kilometres.

As they are relatively small in terms of population and household numbers the presence within an LSOA of a communal establishment such as a boarding school, care home or a military establishment can lead to considerable differences in their demographic profile.
