Middle Super Output Areas (MSOAs), in common with Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs), are statistical boundaries produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) which are more consistent over time than administrative boundaries such as wards. MSOAs are larger than wards and LSOAs but smaller than local authority districts.

North Yorkshire is covered by 76 MSOAs. As with LSOAs they are broadly similar in terms of population and household numbers (they have a target size 7,500 people and 3,000 households through they can range from 5,000 to 15,000 people and 2,000 to 6,000 households). However their boundaries can vary considerably in size.

MSOA boundaries are generally used for datasets where smaller area data is unavailable of where the statistical accuracy of estimated smaller area data would be unreliable, such as small area income estimates.
